Cliffside Park was named the "Park by the Cliffs" when it was formed in 1895, and it still sits right on top of the Hudson Palisades, with Fort Lee to the north, Fairview to the west and Edgewater below the cliff. Homes on the side streets off Anderson and Palisade Avenues mix brick, stucco and siding, often on the same block. Each needs a different kind of prep.

Wind and Weather on the Cliff Edge
Streets near the eastern edge of the cliff take wind, sun and driving rain straight off the river. Caulk joints, window trim and upper-floor siding wear out first there. On those homes we check every joint and sill, replace failed caulk and plan the work for calm, dry days.
Brick and Masonry
Painted brick needs a breathable masonry paint so moisture inside the wall can escape. The brick must be clean and fully dry, and loose mortar should be repaired first. If your brick has never been painted, think carefully before painting it, because once it is painted it needs repainting from then on.
Stucco
Stucco on older Cliffside Park homes often has hairline cracks. We fill them, prime with a masonry primer and use an elastomeric coating where cracks are likely to come back. Soft or hollow-sounding areas are repaired before any paint goes on.
Siding and Trim
Wood siding and trim are scraped, sanded and spot-primed wherever bare wood shows. Soft wood is repaired or replaced. On vinyl siding, choose a vinyl-safe color, since very dark colors can make vinyl warp in strong sun.
Multi-Family Homes in Grantwood and Shadyside
For two- and three-family homes, tell tenants the schedule early, plan for street parking on narrow blocks and paint one side of the building at a time so entrances stay usable.
Best Season to Paint
Late spring through early fall is best. Pick a stretch of dry days with temperatures above the paint's minimum, and avoid painting walls in direct midday sun.
